As well as enjoying the beautiful walk and company, the parade stops at St Nicholas Church in Chawton, to visit Jane’s statue and for photographs. The parade is a fundraiser for the Jane Austen Literacy Foundation, founded by Caroline Jane Knight (the last of Jane’s nieces to grow up at Chawton House and Patron of Jane Austen Regency Week), and retraces Jane’s steps from her cottage in the middle of the village to Chawton ‘Great House’, as Jane called it, to the family library. Access to books provided knowledge and inspiration and is as vital to children today as it was to Jane. 100% of the donations made at the Parade will be spent on literacy programmes and access to reading materials for children in developing and war-torn countries, including Ukraine.
Meet in front of Jane Austen’s House. (Regency attire encouraged but not essential).
