Based on an award-winning novel Poor Things is the fantastical story of a young woman Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter's protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

The film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Score and Best Director, and Emma Stone won the Best Actress Oscar and BAFTA in 2024.

“Poor Things is a steampunk-retrofuturist Victorian freakout and macabre black-comic horror. … A funny, filthy and explosively inventive spin on Frankenstein” [Guardian]. “Wildly imaginative and exhilaratingly over the top, Poor Things is a bizarre, brilliant tour de force for director Yorgos Lanthimos and star Emma Stone.” [Rotten Tomatoes] Join us from 6.30 pm, when the bar will be open, hosted by volunteers from Dementia-friendly Alton.

Poor Things is the next in the fortnightly films on Sunday evenings at Alton Assembly Rooms – please pick up a leaflet from the Assembly Rooms foyer or Goldfinch Books bar.
