Under Continental Skies

A selection of paintings by W H Allen inspired by his trips to France, Italy and Switzerland

Now extended until 27th February 2020

W H Allen (1863–1943) is best known for his evocative watercolours, chalk and pencil sketches recording the landscapes, traditions and people of West Surrey and North-east Hampshire. But he also travelled widely on the continent and the paintings in this exhibition draw on some of the finest examples of his work held in the collections of Hampshire Cultural Trust.

Allen entered the Royal College of Art in 1884, and in 1888 he was awarded a silver medal and a scholarship of £50, enabling him to travel to Europe, the first of many trips which resulted in some of his most accomplished paintings.

These works included commissions in Italy for the Victoria and Albert Museum, Dublin, Edinburgh and Preston museums. He was made a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1903 and the Royal Society of British Artists in 1904 and his work was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1927.

Pop in to the Allen Gallery and banish those winter blues by taking time out to bask in the warm colours and vivid evocation of long lost summers beneath continental skies created by a master landscape painter.

The Allen Gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30am until 4.30pm
