Austen on the Cheap

Inexpensive nineteenth-century reprints helped make Jane Austen canonical, yet many early low-brow versions of her novels remain unrecorded and unstudied.

Professor Barchas describes how her democratising approach to reception history as 'hard-core bibliography meets the Antiques Roadshow'.

Janine Barchas is the Louann and Larry Temple Centennial Professor in English Literature at the University of Texas at Austin. She is the author of 'Matters of Fact in Jane Austen: History, Location, and Celebrity' and the creator behind 'What Jane Saw' ( www.whatjanesaw.org ). Her new book, 'The Lost Books of Jane Austen', will be out in September 2019.
