Regency Week

Regency Week: Regency Remedies

A talk by Penelope Bateman about her display of health and beauty treatments from the period, including hand-made herbal medicines and cosmetics which are based on recipes and ideas of the day. Part of Jane Austen Regency Week 2018

Penelope Bateman is a Regency reenactor demonstrating stillroom remedies in the late 18th and early 19th century.

These remedies are the sort that would be made at home for everyday complaints as part of the annual pattern of domestic life.

Penelope will explore historical approaches to illness and the ways of obtaining relief; show various methods of using and preserving herbs and plants and demonstrate the practical uses of some of the equipment that might be available in the home.

There may be the opportunity to sample a remedy or two and ask questions.
